Catholic Herald is a London based Catholic publication, first introduced in 1888 as a broadsheet newspaper.

The Catholic Herald now publishes as a magazine, with a total circulation of approximately 21,000 copies delivered to Catholic parishes, outlets and postal subscribers.

Project Background

Late in 2013 we were approached by the Catholic Herald to design their new website.  The organisation were looking to launch a magazine in 2014 and were keen to ensure their branding ran smoothly from paper to online presence.

Having heard of the work we do for the Spectator (the two publications share a number of contributors), we were tasked with creating a modern, long-term solution for their ongoing digital future. Here’s how we approached the brief.

Updated aesthetic

We set to work on the site in the middle of the design process for the magazine. The Catholic Herald team were clear they wanted whitespace, good typography and had a strong vision on what they hoped to achieve. We focused on producing an aesthetically pleasing site – one which allowed the news stories and reader comments to take centre stage, without distracting adverts vying for attention.

Mobile friendly

As you would expect for a modern design, the site is fully responsive, allowing it to be viewed on a mobile, tablet or other device; perfect for catching up on the latest news on the commute to and from work.  The simple, clear layout and white space works particularly well when viewed on a mobile device, with news stories taking centre stage.

Greater focus on subscriptions

The previous Catholic Herald site did not generate revenue from advertisements and the team were keen to create a greater focus on selling subscriptions. There are several links to subscribe, all of which were designed to be in-keeping with the overall look and feel of the site.

New job board

With the old website the team were hand building the job page, job by job, using tables. We decided to simplify this process, by adding a system to the site for easy job advert management.

Post Launch

This site was a pleasure to work on. The team at Catholic Herald had a clear vision for their project and compatible design objectives with our team here at interconnect/it.

The Catholic Herald site went live in November 2014 with a smooth launch and no technical issues. Since then we have worked with the team to add extra functionality and features.
